Whales do indeed get battle scars. Wendy is pretty lucky to survive a harpoon (metal spear-like things shot out of cannons during whale hunting). I should probably mention right now that Wendy is a Blue Whale and Pierre is a Sperm Whale, but I didn't give him a huge, blocky head. Sperm Whales really do eat squids, by the way.
